I am an artist working in a representational manner, focusing predominantly on creating still life and landscape paintings. These two genres are my personal favorite because I believe it is with these subjects that I can be most expressive. Whatever the subject, I paint in oils using vivid color and thoughtful compositions, when concentrating on a still-life painting I am fortunate to work out of my home studio and when focusing on the landscape I head outdoors to paint en plein air. Since March 2009 I have been able to devote all of my attention to art, marking the final step in transitioning my career from architect to artist. I live in Alexandria, Virginia with my loving and supportive husband, our infant daughter, and our Abyssinian kitty, Slim. |
Artist Statement:
As an artist, I am inspired to share my fascination with others, developing scenes that evoke emotion, spur a remembrance, and find a way to communicate an observed detail. I view the process of painting as an opportunity to display layers of contemplation; each layer representing design fundamentals that, when combined, become a cohesive message.
When composing and painting a work of art, I search for two aspects important to me. The first is to determine the sense of meaning conveyed in the individual objects of a scene. The second is to explore how the composition can harmoniously communicate a combined, deeper sense of meaning when the whole is composed together. It is this process of investigation and discovery that draws me in and inspires me to paint.
