This week’s “Daily Works on Paper” has been a fun exploration.

This week started on Christmas Eve with an imagined Christmas tree scene with presents in a house with ochre walls, warm and ancestral…

Then on Christmas day, I had extra time to explore painting a two-page spread of Christmas morning before the gifts were unwrapped. This painting was inspired by the Nabis art movement, I am a big fan of Pierre Bonnard and as I am still learning to master gouache, it seemed fitting to flatten my shapes to colors and patterns. I really love how this piece turned out.

With this project, I am deliberately stretching my skills.  In that I am working a lot from imagination.  I am creating a piece from memory or adapting an idea and changing it to express the idea and feeling I want to express.

The flowers were from direct observation. You might already know this, but I really am crazy about flowers and winter flowers are especially important to me.

This painting of an amaryllis in a window sill is from imagination. I sketched the idea in pencil a few weeks ago, and this week I decided to try it out and explore.
