The Art Spirit by Robert Henri

This book is full of snippets of helpful advice from the reknown art educator Robert Henri.

It includes his various letters to students, axioms to live by, and inspirational quotes.

Here are a few of my favorites:

The work of art is a result; is the output of a progress in development and stands as a record and marks the degree of development (pg. 67)

Be willing to paint a picture that does not look like a picture. (pg. 106)

We read books. They make us think. It matters very little whether we agree with the books or not. (pg. 186) {I think this also applies to art, that one must observe all types and styles of art, because viewing different work makes us think.}
