Make Your Painting Sessions Productive by Mastering Painting Fundaments

my palette in 2009, it has not changed much in the past 12 years

When I began to use oil paints in 2006, I quickly got overwhelmed by trying to understand and incorporate everything I was being told to create a good painting.

There were so many things to focus on, getting the colors mixed right, making sure my values were spot on, and edges, don’t even ask!  There were just so many things I was trying to keep straight in my mind, I often ended a painting session confused and exhausted.

Something had to give, so I committed to changing the way I was learning to paint. I narrowed my attention to mastering one painting fundamental at a time. After this, things really began to takeoff.

Because I like to read and explore ideas, I took what I was learning and organized the ideas I was coming across over and over again into specific categories I call “painting fundamentals”. I then began to focus on one fundamental at a time, and I would work on that technique until I felt comfortable with it. And then I would move onto the next painting fundamental and get to a comfort level with that one. Soon my painting sessions were getting better and better.

some favorite books

I have read a lot of books over the years, painted my way into many corners, and wished there was someone out there to show me the way to improve my painting skills. There wasn’t someone for me, but I am here for you!

All of my classes are geared to teach the concepts of these art fundamentals in a very deep way. Techniques that can make a painting go from meh to bravo!

Are you curious about what these painting fundamentals are? They are: color quality, tonal quality, and edge quality.

The lessons inside the Painting Flowers with Liz membership is full of lessons that are organized to build upon painting fundamentals. Not only do we spend time studying the abstract concepts of these principles, we then directly apply the ideas into a floral still life painting.

This way we do not just become “book-smart” with regard to these art fundamentals, but instead we have gained a deeper level of learning. The type of learning that makes painting come naturally.
