Vermeer Master Copy Class

Master Copy Class by Elizabeth Floyd

Tuesdays, each term is 5-weeks long

$250

Autumn TERM:
Tuesdays, October 4, 2022 to November 1, 2022,

We will dive deeply into the creative process of Johannes Vermeer.  Vermeer was a master in presenting domestic scenes with people and daily objects of life. In our master copy class we will look deeply at his painting, The Milkmaid.

We will explore how he used layers of paint by examining and analyzing detailed images of his brushtrokes. He used multiple paint layers to achieve a variety of effects.

An integral part of the artistic process is to create “copies” of the master artists.  In this 5-week ONLINE class, you will learn all about the artist we are focusing on and his processes as we “copy” his work. Due to the detailed method of Vermeer’s technique, we will only have time to focus on a master copy in the autumn term.

This class has a bit of art history and a whole lot of art.

  . . .

My goal for the class is to teach ideas and concepts that are best absorbed by action.  The action of reverse-engineering and problem solving, and then executing through practice.

Over a three-year period, I copied seven paintings at the National Gallery of Art here in DC.  I covered the gamut of subject matter from Dutch Golden Age still-life paintings to French Impressionism.  I base a lot of my own artistic growth on the time spent copying masterpieces and then applying the lessons learned to new paintings I created.

For this class we will utilize technology and paint from photo references.  The master copy will be from a high-quality photo reference we get from a museum, and the subsequent painting project will be original still-life setups inspired by the master copy, I will provide the class.

All classes are taught via ZOOM, recordings are provided to enrolled students.
