I am drawn to color, pattern, and a depth of feeling. A feeling that is felt deep in the body and multilayered. ⁠Feelings that can’t always be expressed with words, but so felt that your entire body hums with the rhythm of it.

This painting of daffodils in a majolica pitcher is surrounded by the layered interests of my life. Books on art and art history, collected pieces of porcelain, and my book of poetry by Andrew Marvell. ⁠ ⁠

While setting up this painting, I was in a particular mood, wistful for the easy days of my 20s but also loving the complexity of life in the present. I was reminded of the feelings of contradiction in Andrew Marvell’s poem, “On a Drop of Dew”. In this poem, the human soul is a dew drop, and even though it is living in the world on a rose petal, it is gazing a the sky wanting to return to heaven.

I often think about how I am craving for something else, while also living a pretty good life. This painting is an acknowledgement of this sentiment, while also opposing it, because to me, the act of painting is a mediation, a celebration of the present, the here and now.

I love how life is rich and complex. I love all the thoughts, ideas, and emotions that fill my mind everyday. This painting is just that, a rich observation of a moment in April when thoughts of elsewhere were intruding and I chose to be present.
