My final session copying Vincent Van Gogh’s Roses at the NGA here in DC
Below are all the blog posts I wrote as I worked my way through this Master copy. I learned a lot completing this painting, specifically how to use impasto texture to create movement and emotion in my work.
In "The Basic Characteristics of Color," Elizabeth Floyd shares the core principles she teaches in her painting membership to help artists master color mixing. This post explores hue (a color’s name on the infinite spectrum), temperature (warm vs. cool, influenced by simultaneous contrast), value (lightness to darkness), and saturation (purity and intensity)—three independent properties that shape every color’s appearance.
I teach 9-week an online Still Life with Oils class with the first three weeks dedicated to learning how to create a master copy. If you are interested in learning when registration is open for this class and the others I teach, sign up for my teaching updates.
